Read the Read Me files that come with everything !

Check to see if there are known problems or special procedures to use when installing the item.

As a case in point, to properly update System 7.5.1 to 7.5.3 you have to start up the Mac with only the standard Apple extensions active. Anything that isn't active when the installer is run is not updated. This goes against the usual rule of restarting with extensions off before installing anything.
